General Features of the family Zingiberaceae

Zingiberaceae with about 50 genera and more than 1500 species are distributed mainly in the tropics and subtropics. India has rich diversity of Zingiberaceous plants. perhaps 200 of the world taxa occur in India. Many species are economically important as source of food.

 

    

 Major areas of research at Calicut University on gingers include Taxonomy, Anatomy, Palynology, Cytology, Phytochemistry, Molecular phylogeny, Dermal morphology, Domestication of wild ornamental gingers etc. Five theses were submitted for Ph.D. and five are now working for Ph.D. Both fresh collections from field and the germplasm collections from the garden are utilized for research. We are also collaborating with many instituted like Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram, JNTBGRI, IISR Calicut, etc.
