Ensete is an unique genus with chromosome number n=9. It is characterized by non-stoloniferous habit and is propagated only by seeds. The genus consists of seven species and one variety and is distributed discontinuously between tropical Africa and tropical Asia. But in India there are only two species viz., E. glaucum and E. superbum.
